A Fitting Addiction

My video collection goes far beyond my love of movies.

In fact, family and close friends have been aware for quite some time that I've suffered from a not-so-serious addiction since the early to mid-eighties. Evidence of this almost-thirty year addiction can be witnessed in our cabin's fitness room, where masses of fitness VHSs and DVDs line its shelves.

Yes, I am an exercise video addict, and I am kinda hoping I always will be.

I was a teenager when it all began. It started with an old record player, the Jane Fonda Workout Album, and me doing aerobics and the like to Jimmy Buffet's Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. Not long after, ESPN introduced Denise Austin and Channel 3 started each day with Joanie Greggain's Morning Stretch. Then Channel 48 began running The Twenty Minute Workout twice daily. (I have to wonder whether that show was even legal...but, still, I own that on VHS, too.)

Since then, I have amassed a collection of almost every kind of workout video.  You name it, I probably have it.  From instructors like Kathy Smith, Tamilee Webb, and Cindy Whitmarsh to celebrities like Cher, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer, I have VHS, DVDs, and mutiple notebook downloads (not to mention all the related accessories, including the step, the bands, and the stability ball.)  I even have the double-VHS set of The Country Music Workout ~ though, no matter how much I love country music, it is a gift that will probably never be used before the geriatric phase of my life.

Thankfully, some things have helped to get my addiction under control, namely Video Fitness, Collage Video, and the customer reviews at Amazon.  I can now be more selective about the workouts I purchase, as each of these websites help me determine if a given fitness video is right for me.  Had any of these sites existed  back in 1990, I may not have bought the Jody Watley Dance To Fitness Workout afterall.  But, then again, when would I ever have been able to attempt to tone my quads to I'm Looking For A New Love, Baby?  Probably never.

Today is a happy day for a workout video junkie like me because the one and only Jillian Michaels releases her Extreme Shed and Shred Workout.  I don't need to see what the reviews are saying about this one, because she's a given:  if Jillian makes a workout DVD, I buy it ~ no matter how crazy she is.

With a little help from my workout DVD friends, maybe I will drop a few pounds before the indulgent Christmas holidays are before us.  In any event, I guess it's better to be addicted to something healthier than the thousands of cookies I'll be baking during this cherished season.

Whatever gets us moving is a good thing, whether its Turbo Jam, Walking Away The Pounds, or the many other options other than a workout video. Many of us vow to wait until January to start a fresh new exercise regimen, but I say there's no better day to start than today. Even during one of the busiest times of the year, almost everyone has twenty or thirty minutes a few times a week to get moving.

I'm at least going to try. Have a wonderful Tuesday.
